There’s no doubt that American Tourister has a lot of creativity running behind it. A prime example of that is the American Tourister Disney collection, which is targeted toward kids. The American Tourister Disney 16-inch carry-on is a cute and affordable suitcase for young travelers. Adults can also use it as an underseater; there’s no shame in walking around with Elsa and Anna printed on the front of your suitcase if you’re a true Disney fan.
In this American Tourister Disney carry-on review, we’ll find out what features it comes with, how durable it is, and more. We’ll also compare the Disney carry-on to similar suitcases from American Tourister and other brands to see how it ranks up against them.
- An excellent choice for young travelers
- Its durability could be improved
- Not the greatest warranty terms
- Lacking in features
The American Tourister Disney carry-on is one of the most beautiful suitcases on the market. It’s an incredible choice for your kid, despite not having a lot of space on the inside. It’s also a very affordable bag, even though some color variations can be overpriced.
That said, it does have some flaws, like its durability. It’s made from ABS, which is the least durable plastic on the market, and its warranty isn’t great.
Overall, the Disney carry-on is an excellent choice for your child, especially if it’s their first suitcase. It’s durable enough to withstand light to moderate use, like infrequent traveling, but it won’t be good enough for frequent use, for example, when taking it to school. When used frequently, you shouldn’t expect it to last longer than a year.
Dimensions & Weight (8/10)
The American Tourister Disney bag is advertised as a 16-inch carry-on. Its exact measurements are 18 x 13 x 9 inches (46 x 33 x 23 cm), which is over most underseat carry-on restrictions. But, you’ll have no issue using it as a regular carry-on.
That said, you might be able to bypass the restrictions if you don’t overpack the suitcase. This will be optimal if you want to bring along two carry-ons for you and your significant other and the Disney carry-on for your kid.
The interior of the suitcase is somewhat cramped because the retractable handle takes up a lot of space from the main compartment. According to the owners of the carry-on, you’ll be able to fit children’s clothes for 3-5 days in the American Tourister Disney carry-on.
A positive aspect of the Disney 16-inch carry-on is that it’s very lightweight compared to other underseaters and carry-ons. It weighs in at 4.32lbs (1.95kg), which is light enough for a kid to carry it by themselves.
Materials & Water-Resistance (8/15)
The American Tourister Disney carry-on is made from ABS. ABS is the weakest of the plastics used in hardside luggage, but it’s also the cheapest one, which is why many brands opt for it instead of polycarbonate.
Most customers had great things to say about the quality of the ABS used. The bag should withstand a few bumps, despite ABS being the worst in terms of durability compared to other plastics. Some were feeling risky and decided to check the bag, and it still held up perfectly without any issues.
In terms of water resistance, the Disney carry-on shouldn’t have a major issue in the case of a drizzle. Hardside suitcases don’t allow any water to get inside them, but the zippers used in most bags will leave a few openings for a few drops to penetrate the main compartment. Still, in case of light rain, your clothes should be dry.
As with most affordable luggage, the American Tourister Disney carry-on has its flaws when it comes to durability. Before explaining what the bad reviews were about, it’s worth noting that only a small percentage of hundreds of reviews criticized the suitcase’s durability. Many customers were delighted with the bag, stating that their kids and grandkids have been using it for several trips.
But recently, a lot of reviews mentioned that the Disney carry-on was shipped with dents even before unpacking. This could either mean that the shipping companies are doing a lousy job or that the case’s durability has deteriorated. We believe it’s the latter since it’s been a recurring theme for the past few months.
In other reviews, the zippers received some criticism for their quality, because occasionally they’d get stuck and ruin the fabric. Some people also mentioned that the retractable handle occasionally gets stuck.
The American Tourister Disney carry-on has two skate wheels. While these aren’t as great as the ones on Travelpro’s rollaboards, they do their job pretty well. Once you consider that the bag is designed for kids, it’s lovely to see that American Tourister made sure that the wheels roll smoothly, albeit not extremely durable.
The same can be said for the retractable handle. While its quality isn’t great, it serves well as a starter for young travelers since they’ll be able to pull their bags around easily. There’s also the top handle, which is present in most suitcases nowadays. Thankfully, we couldn’t find any complaints about its durability.
Unfortunately, the suitcase only has one more handle on the bottom, which helps when you take the carry-on out of the overhead bin.
Additional Features (4/10)
Similar to most affordable suitcases, the American Tourister Disney doesn’t come with too many additional features, like TSA-approved combination locks or expandable zippers, which is why we’ve given it a fairly low rating here. Instead of a TSA lock, the main zipper has a keyring, which you can use to lock the suitcase with a regular lock, purchased separately.
The interior is also fairly simple. It’s split into two equal parts, which are divided by a fabric zippered sheet on one side, and x-shaped compression straps on the other one. The interior is fully lined and also features a pattern similar to what you see on the exterior.
The design of the American Tourister Disney carry-on is, for lack of a better term, magical. It’s one of the few collections on the market that doesn’t have different color variations. Instead, they offer many different prints – several ones from Frozen, Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, and Disney Princesses. American Tourister outdid themselves with creating this collection, so we had to give them credit for that. The cute design, which is loved by most kids, is the main reason why the American Tourister Disney carry-on is so popular.
American Tourister is owned by Samsonite. This means that every American Tourister suitcase has a warranty very similar to Samsonite.
The Disney collection comes with a 10-year limited global warranty. The warranty terms are nearly identical to what Travelpro offers. This means that the warranty doesn’t cover any damage caused by misuse. But, it will cover any manufacturing defects if American Tourister assesses that the damage was done by them and not the owner of the bag or baggage handlers.
You should keep in mind that the warranty isn’t valid if you bought the suitcase second-hand. Also, the brand will not cover the shipping costs to the repair center, and if they deny your warranty claim, you’ll have to pay extra for them to return the bag to you.
It’s hard to gauge the value of the American Tourister Disney carry-on. Most of the time, the bag will be used by kids. So, despite having excellent reviews and costing close to $50, it’s still on the higher end for kids’ luggage, because you can also find kids’ suitcases for only 30-40$ in many retail stores.
However, American Tourister is a somewhat reputable brand, and they’re owned by Samsonite, which means that their warranty is much better. Also, only a few customers complained about its durability – most of its reviews are only positive. So even though it’s on the pricier end, we think that it offers a lot of value, because of its cute looks, durability, and warranty.
How Does the American Tourister Disney Carry-On Compare to Similar Suitcases?
The Star Wars carry-on is a bit better option than the American Tourister Disney carry-on. Many customers complained about the Disney bag’s lack of interior packing space. This problem doesn’t appear on the Star Wars 21-inch carry-on, as it offers more packing space. However, it’s subsequently heavier and more expensive than the Disney carry-on.
The 4 Kix Underseater is a great softside alternative to the Disney bag. Their packing space is similar, and their price points aren’t too far apart. They also have some of the same flaws, mainly in terms of durability and moveability. So, if you think that your kid would prefer a softside bag, the 4 Kix is an excellent choice. Its main drawback is that it isn’t aimed at kids, so its bleak design might not be enjoyed by your kid.
Apart from American Tourister’s bags, the one that goes up against the Disney carry-on is Rockland’s My First Hardside Spinner bag. Both bags are geared towards kids, their dimensions are very similar, and they both have stunning designs. Their main difference is that the Rockland carry-on is made from polycarbonate, making it a bit more expensive, and Rockland’s warranty terms are worse. Both bags are praised by their owners, so we’d say that both of them are good choices.
The American Tourister Disney carry-on is one hardside bag that stands out from any other suitcase you put alongside it. It’s beautiful, rolls well, and it’ll only set you back a bit more than $50, which is a bargain.
That said, the carry-on has some flaws. The interior packing space is pretty cramped, it’s not the most durable suitcase out there, and it lacks many features that most hardside suitcases have.
Either way, you’ll probably fit enough clothes for a weekend trip inside the bag. Considering that kids’ clothes are much smaller, you could fit much more depending on your child’s age. Overall, alongside Rockland’s My First Hardside Spinner bag, the Disney carry-on is one of the best kids’ suitcases on the market.
