Tri-State Train: A Unifying Initiative
As an experienced travel journalist, Kevin Erickson knows firsthand the struggles of traveling between Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Despite sharing borders, public transport connections often leave a lot to be desired. That’s where the tri-state train comes in, offering an hourly service between Liège, Maastricht, and Aachen.
What makes this train unique is not only its joint spearheading by the Belgian, German, and Dutch governments, but also its promise of seamless connections. No more transfers in Maastricht for Belgian and German travelers!
🚅 Boosting the Regional Economy and Environment
The Dutch government believes this improved connection will make it easier for residents to commute for work, school, family visits, or recreation. Furthermore, the tri-state train is expected to boost the region’s economy, making rail travel more attractive as an alternative to short flights.
🗓️ Launching in December
While the exact timetable has not been released, the train is scheduled to hit the tracks in December. The three responsible service providers – Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), Arriva, and the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS) – have confirmed that the train is financially, technically, and logistically feasible.
Dutch State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management Vivianne Heijnen, Belgian Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet, and Limburg Deputy of Mobility and Infrastructure Maarten van Gaans-Gijbels have signed a letter of intent containing various agreements to ensure the train’s successful launch by year’s end.
Stay tuned for more updates, including ticket pricing and availability, as we approach the December launch!
